INSTALMENTS

In January 2011, the CECT moved from the Research Building on the Burjassot Campus of the University of Valencia, to its new instalments in the Scientific Parc of the University, located in Paterna (Valencia), very close to the former location, and at a distance of 10 Km from Valencia city.

In the Scientific Parc, the CECT is located on the ground floor of the 3 CUE building. It covers a surface area of around 500 m2, with an already agreed extension of 225 m2 foreseen for 2012. This represents a significant increase in respect to its previous location.

In the present instalments there are three offices and three full-equipped laboratories (one for molecular and chemotaxonomic techniques, one for eucaryots and one for procaryots). Three rooms are dedicated to: cleaning area, where the used material and cultures are being cleaned and sterilized, a separated area for the preparation and sterilization of culture media, and another one for the freeze-drying process. In addition, there are four cold chambers: one for storage of culture media, a second one for storing cultures that do nor resist freezing or freeze-drying, a third one for samples/trains sent to the CECT for deposit or identification. The fourth is dedicated to holding the freeze-dried ampoules. In a separated room there are three deep freezers at -80°C to keep cultures as complementary/alternative preservation system.

Besides the equipment of a Microbiology laboratory acting as public culture collection, the CECT has installed the necessary equipment for molecular and chemotaxonomic analysis.

Most of the strains are being maintained freeze-dried at 12°C in opaque black plastic bags. Nevertheless, there are other strains (mainly filamentous fungi) that do not resist this process and have to be kept as active cultures with periodic subculturing at 4°C. All strains are being at -80°C as well.

With respect to the computer equipment, the CECT uses several servers to house the web and associated data bases, which also hold the electronic mail and the shared files. Moreover, CECT has a molecular biology server from which different programs to manipulate and align sequences or other data can be accessed. Automatic back-up copies of the servers data are sent to back-up servers.
